Tata Iris To Compete With Bajaj RE60
Bajaj has been selling three-wheeler auto-rickshaws in India for ages now. The Indian company had showcased their production ready four-wheeler RE60 at the Delhi Auto Expo in 2014. While Bajaj is more than willing to launch this vehicle, there are some issues with the government.
Tata Motors will now join the competition with their Iris compact van. This will be considered as a replacement to the auto-rickshaws that we are currently used to. Tata plans to use these vehicles in Mumbai as well as Delhi, but they will have to get permission from the transport department first.
The Government as well as transport department has an issue with both these vehicles. Their issue is actually straightforward, both these new vehicles have four wheels. They, however, want the Iris and RE60 to replace the current breed of transportation three-wheelers.
The new Iris is popular in villages and has recently been retro-fitted with a CNG kit. The vehicle will return great fuel economy and running costs too will be affordable.
The Tata Iris weighs 680 kilograms, while the RE60 by Bajaj weighs significantly less at 400 kilograms. Tata has provided the Iris with a 611cc, while RE60 from Bajaj will feature a smaller 216cc engine.
The RE60 will be able to accommodate passengers in two configurations, either 2+2 or 1+3. Tata Iris, on the other hand excels in this department by offering either a 5-seater or a more spacious 3-seater option.
The major concern for both will be the pricing of these new vehicles. We expect the new Bajaj RE60 to be more expensive than the 3-wheeler they currently price at INR 1.42 lakhs (ex-showroom).
The Iris from Tata will be a bit more expensive and will cost approximately INR 2 lakhs. While it will be significantly more expensive, it offers better protection from weather and importantly, will be safer in the case of an accident.
