Students Aim To Break Nurburgring Record & Win Le Mans

The Nurburgring is located in Germany and is considered by top drivers and riders as the most difficult and demanding race circuit ever built. It is popularly known as 'The Green Hell', thanks to Sir Jackie Stewart, three-time Formula One Champion.

Now a group of students have taken up the challenge to beat the Nurburgring record and win the 24 hour Le Mans challenge too. The Nurburgring overall record is held by Stefan Bellof back in 1983, he recorded a lap time of six minutes and eleven seconds in a Porsche 956.

The whole circuit of Nurburgring consists of several turns and elevation changes across the 28.265 kilometre stretch. It is impossible for a first timer to set a fast lap, while even experienced competitors can't memorize the entire track. The college student will try breaking the record in a hybrid called 'IM01'.

The students that developed the vehicle call themselves InMotion and study at Technical University of Eindhoven and the Fontys University of Applied Sciences. They are from Netherlands and their competition vehicle is a blend between a Le Mans prototype and a Formula One vehicle.

InMotion's 'IM01' will sport a rotary engine, however it won't be the primary power source. The main power will be delivered to the wheels via four electric motors that are in place for each wheel. The rotary engine will be supplementing power to the primary source to extend its range and power. The vehicle in the image sports a huge rear diffuser, covered wheels, canopy greenhouse and will be very close to the ground.

The college going students have not revealed any other specifications, they believe it will be sufficient to break the immortal record. They will have to first prepare their vehicle and will then have to seek permission to run the Nurburgring course. They will be further challenged to meet the needs of FIA officials to compete in the 24 Hour Le Mans challenge.
