Peugeot 2008 DKR And Red Bull In Dakar Rally
Peugeot and Red Bull will be joining forces to compete in the Dakar Rally with their 2008 DKR rally spec car. Peugeot have acquired the driving skills of Carlos Saiz and Cyril Despres. The car used for competition purpose looks close to the street spec crossover, but gets more muscle and power.
Peugeot have earlier competed in the Dakar Rally and have won the event in succession from 1987 to 1990, post which they gave up racing. Now, after many years Peugeot have decided to compete again. The French car manufacturer will be using the 2008 crossover with the DKR suffix.
Peugeot have paid keen attention to the design, size and many other aspects and asked its engineers to follow the demands. The 2008 DKR has an aggressive off-roader look. The rally spec car will sport 37-inch Michelin rubber along with lifted suspension.
The designers of 2008 DKR explain that their base car was suited for easy modification for the Dakar Rally challenge.
Like most competing teams they have not revealed their engine and will keep it under wraps for as long as they can. Peugeot has confirmed though that their car will have two-wheel drive. This permits them to utilise bigger tyres and longer suspension travel.
Project Leader at Peugeot Sport, Jean-Christophe Pailler explains,"We supplied them with the basic key dimensions, as well as other information such as the cabin space we required, plus the wheel size and the suspension travel. They also had aerodynamic data resulting from our early simulation work."
Peugeot will have to compete with Mini All4 Racing, who have won for the past three years. Their team was in the top ten with seven cars and dominated the podium. Let's see if Peugeot can overthrow the current winners.
