Lucknow To Improve Public Transport With New Routes And Vehicles
The Regional Transport Authority (RTA) have marked new routes for public transport vehicles to carry passengers in Lucknow. These new routes will be added to the already existing 49 routes.
Many cities like Gomti Nagar, Kalyanpur, Aashiana and Madiaon are expanding at a rapid rate and public transport is very much needed. They have witnessed very high mobility among people in recent time.
Once these new routes are sanctioned, CNG powered vehicles will be at service for the public. RTA will put this proposal across in August with senior officials of the transport department.
In a survey conducted by the RTA, no new routes have been sanctioned since 2006 inspite of rapid growth in these cities.
Lucknow has a population of 28 lakh people, but only 7,000 public transport vehicles. 260 city buses operate only in eight routes. Due to this, auto-rickshaws and tempos have become the most popular mode of commute among the people.

While the larger tempos have permission to operate in the 49 sanctioned routes, the smaller rickshaws have access throughout the city.
In December 2009, a cap on issuing new permits to these tempos and rickshaws by the RTO widened the gap. An official said that they will strongly recommend doing away with the restriction on issuing new permits to autos and tempos.
