Is Formula One Engine Oil Suitable For Your Car?

By Rajkamal

Formula One cars are an engineering marvel. From the massive front and rear wings to the powerful engine that is mounted behind the driver. The engine is part of the structural support framework. As of 2014, the engines were limited to 1.6-litre V6 and turbocharged.

These high revving engines were limited to 18,000 rpm in 2009 to cut costs and improve reliability. Having said all this, lubrication is a key factor for these engines. When Renault Sport F1 and Total engineers were asked if a normal everyday use car could run with F1 engine oil, here is what they had to say.

The first and foremost was that the F1 engine oil has to be replaced frequently. These oils are designed to last for just 3,000 km.

Also, a few of the detergents used to clean the engine and to keep away foreign bodies in a regular lubricant are too low in a F1 lubricant to ensure optimum protection for the engine during regular oil change intervals in a normal car.

Keep in mind as well that F1 cars always run in hot temperatures whereas a normal car is used in all weather. The F1 lubricant lacks a few cold properties that a regular oil has to help the engine during cold weather. Apart from the above mentioned, they have the same viscosity grades under high shear at 150°C.

So there you have it, F1 lubricants are not advisable nor designed for a regular car. The engine oil used for these fast engineering marvels is purpose-built exclusively for them.
