Inmates To Build Cars

For the first time in India, a manufacturing unit has been set up inside a jail, where the inmates will be involved in manufacturing automotive components.

Minda Furukawa Electric Pvt. Ltd (MFE), a joint venture between Spark Minda, Ashok Minda Group from India and Furukawa of Japan, have set up their manufacturing facility in Tihar.

This one off small scale production unit was inaugurated by Alok Verma, The Director General of Delhi prisons.

The company makes wiring harness and products related to wiring looms for four wheelers.

Mukesh Prasad, DIG and PRO of Delhi prisons said that the inmates will be profited by this move. The inmates will gain experience as well as be paid which will be helpful for inmates to rehabilitate themselves after completing their terms behind bars.

The production line will be supervised by professionals and the inmates can earn much more that what other inmates earn in jail.

Prasad said that there will be 30 inmates working initially but the numbers will increase over a period of time. The DIG says that this one of a kind facility will not only benefit inmates but also their family as they are getting paid to do the job.
