Germany May Begin Charging Foreign Cars For Autobahn Use
Germany, known for being one of the greatest car manufacturing countries in the world, is also known for its roads. The autobahn is famous for having no speed limits, but is now planning to levy charges for foreign registered vehicles as a revenue raising measure.
According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), they have currently proposed a charge of 10 euros for a 10-day pass and 20 euros for a two-month pass.
Annual permits could cost around 100 euros, depending on the age of the vehicle. The vehicle's engine capacity and emissions will also play a role in this. Germany is expecting to generate around 600 million euros annually which will be invested to maintain the roads and build new ones as well.
Currently, the European Union has strict laws against discrimination for its members to prohibit free movement between countries. Every measure is being taken to stop this new rule from being enforced.

Currently, using the autobahn is free for vehicles which weigh under 3.5-tons.
The autobahn is the federal controlled highway system in Germany. It was constructed during 1925 and was developed during Hitler's reign.
Although the highway has speed limits ranging between around 60 to 160 km/h, it is mostly enforced only during bad weather and if road conditions have deteriorated. Because of this, people often push their cars to achieve maximum speed. This is a dream place for a person who owns a supercar. The autobahn does however record 2 million accidents a year.
