Ford’s Innovative Green Manufacturing Process For A Sustainable Future
Its important for companies to implement eco-friendly manufacturing processes for a greener tomorrow and Ford understands this. The American automaker has implemented several simple and innovative production techniques and practices which help in a small way in creating a sustainable future.
One interesting manufacturing process involves recycling cotton from old jeans and shirts to make hood, dash and floor carpet insulators and interior padding.
Another is the Ford designed EMOS - the Energy Management Operating System. This system helps in saving energy and reducing waste at every stage of a business - from manufacturing vehicles in plants across the world to the offices, dealerships and people. Through this system, Ford says, it has cut the energy use per vehicle's production by more than 21%, from 2011 to 2013 in its Asia Pacific region operations.
Ford's commitment to environment extends to the vehicles and their mechanics itself. The best example of which is the award winning EcoBoost engine - a 1.0-litre engine which uses turbocharging, variable valve timing and direct fuel injection, making it 20 percent more fuel economical than larger engine, while still delivering the same amount of performance.
"We have been making conscious efforts towards a sustainable future by incorporating several green practices in our manufacturing processes. We are re-using 100% of the waste water generated in the plant, and have reduced electricity consumption per car by 10%. 100% of the hazardous waste generated is either recycled or co-processed in the cement industries - making it a zero landfill plant. Moreover, we have substantially enhanced our utilisation of resources with the help the path-breaking green manufacturing processes," says P. Senthil Kumar, vice president, Vehicle Operations, Ford India.
Ford's commitment to efficiency goes further. In order to achieve even higher goals in the future, Ford has installed an Energy Roadmap - a set of projects in place to streamline areas of management, process and facility improvement, green technology implementation and more.
