Continental Tyres With Tread Depth Sensors Are The Future
Tyres continue to be the most ignored important part of a vehicle. This despite the fact that they are critical to road safety as well as to extract the maximum mileage from a vehicle.
One reason being, tyres are wrongly thought to be simple components that do not require a lot of maintenance. One could not be more wrong because as there are several aspects of the humble tyre that require careful monitoring to keep things running smoothly, literally.
While tyre pressure monitors, which are increasingly becoming a standard equipment in high-end cars, are considered a breakthrough in making tyre maintenance easy, a little more help from technology would not hurt.

Count on Continental, the world's fourth largest tyre manufacturer, to make some advances in this regard. The company has come out with intelligent tyres that have built-in tread depth sensors.
Continental says, this, among other advanced features will be part of their intelligent tyres. The company says the "new feature is tentatively slated to be available as of 2017 in new vehicle models equipped with direct tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) from Continental."

Electronic tread depth detection as it is referred to as, works by monitoring the gradually changing rolling characteristics from the time the tyres are fitted. This data is automatically compared against standard data.
If the tread is run down to below a tire-specific threshold value, the on-board electrical system signals that a tire change is due. If required, the system will even let the local service centre know that tyre needs changing.
Continental has also developed sensor which will be able to pick-up when a tyre is overloaded and will automatically work in tandem with a car's other electronic systems to adjust to the extra load.
From November, the European Union will make it mandatory for all cars to come equipped with tyre pressure monitors. This measure is being taken not just keep drivers from driving on tyres with low pressure, but also to improve fuel efficiency and thus reduce emission.
Tyres of the future are expected to be intelligent that ‘speak' with the rest of the car and also communicates with the driver through smartphone apps.
