The problem may lay in the gas generators that could rupture and avoid activation of the airbag. The recall by BMW is a voluntary precautionary measure, which aims at minimising the risk of faulty airbag activation.
The German automobile manufacturer explains this as an extension of 2013 recall program. During that time, the supplier of the component specified a period for the faulty gas generators. Last year they recalled approximately 2,40,000 units of the 3 Series. They were recently informed that more vehicles could be affected by similar issues.
