BMW & Daimler Wireless Car Charging Technology
German luxury car manufacturer BMW will join hands with Daimler to develop a wireless car charging technology. The new technology by the German duo will enable electric car owners to charge their vehicles without messy cables.
The technology is still in developmental stages and will take a while before it is ready for mass use. When the wireless technology is in place BMW claims that its i8 vehicle can be charged without cables in a matter of two hours.
The wireless technology will use an alternating magnetic field to transfer electricity. The system will require two coils, one will be placed within the vehicle, while the other would be placed at the parking spot on the floor. BMW claims this system will be roughly 90% efficient and will transfer electricity at 3.6 kW.
The German duo explain that the wireless charging technology is future ready. It will be able to charge bigger batteries and complex electric powered vehicles. If required, the system will be capable of transferring electricity at the rate of 7kW.

The principal of the system is simple, owners have to park their vehicle over the plate on the floor. There will be Wi-Fi within the vehicle to find the location of the charging plate. The process will begin with the push of a button from within the vehicle.
The German automobile maker BMW has not revealed when this wireless technology will be available to all. The system would really take off as the system would make it easier for electric vehicle owners to charge their vehicles. The European markets have witnessed an increase in buyers of electric vehicles.
The German manufacturers are not the only to work on a wireless charging technology. Japanese automobile giants Toyota and Nissan are also working on a similar project. It would be great if this technology could eventually be incorporated into roads so vehicles would never run out of charge.
