Upcoming Cars In India; New Car Launches Scheduled

Did you think fuel prices, always eager to touch new heights, fresh duty on automobiles and the generally weaker global auto industry would negatively influence the launch of new cars in India? You could not have been more mistaken. In fact, it seems to be the opposite.

Car manufacturers are searching for new avenues where none existed before. They have forged new partnerships to better cope with the problems at hand. And there are more new car launches scheduled than ever before. Lets us take a look at some of the upcoming cars that will likely hit Indian shores in the near future.

Datsun GO

Expected Launch Date: Early 2014, possibly in March
Expected Price: INR 2.5 lakhs to INR 4 lakhs

The first car from the resurrected Datsun brand, GO hatchback will be powered by 1.2 liter petrol engine from Micra and 5 speed transmission. The car's highlights will be its low cost and spacious interior.


Datsun GO+

Expected Launch Date: Could happen by mid-2014
Expected Price: INR 5.5 lakhs (In Indonesia)

Datsun GO+, the MPV based on the GO hatch, is a low cost, sub-4 meter vehicle. It will be launched in Indonesia first. Although no word about a possible launch in India is out yet, it will definitely arrive here. Possibly by mid-2014. It is powered by the same 1.2 liter petrol engine as the GO and Micra.


Skoda Octavia (Updated)

Launched: October 3

The all new Skoda Octavia, built on the MQB platform, will launch in India sporting a 177 HP 1.8-litre TSI petrol engine, with seven speed automatic transmission; a 141 HP 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine, with auto and manual transmissions; and base 138 HP 1.4 litre TSI petrol, with the manual.

Nissan Terrano

Launched: October 9
Price: Starts at 9.59L

Nissan Terrano is a premium compact SUV that is based on Renault Duster. The Terrano comes with the same engine specs as Duster, but offers more features. Nissan is contemplating an all-wheel drive version of the Terrano.

Suzuki XA Alpha/iV 4

Expected Launch Date: Early 2014
Expected Price: N/A

Suzuki iV 4 Concept was unveiled at Frankfurt Auto Show with plans to launch the compact SUV model in Europe. The Maruti XA Alpha on the other hand, is similarly styled as the iV 4 and will likely hit Indian shores sometime next year.

Volkswagen Taigun

Expected Launch Date: N/A
Expected Price: INR 10 lakhs - INR 15 lakhs

VW has plenty of premium segment sedans and a premium hatchback on offer in India, but lags behind in the popular compact SUV space. Launch of the Taigun, powered by a new 1.0 liter TSI engine is expected to fill that place. While rumors are abound, not clarity on the matter has emerged.

Honda Jazz

Expected Launch Date: Early 2014
Expected Price: N/A

2014 Honda Jazz is already on sale in Japan. The new Jazz comes with a significantly refreshed design over the older generation. The Jazz was discontinued from India owing to poor sales. Honda is hoping the fresh take on the premium hatch will appeal to Indian buyers. Expect it to be premiered at the 2014 Auto Expo.

Honda Mobilio Prototype

Expected Launch Date: Mid-2014
Expected Price: INR 10-15 lakhs

Mobilio is Honda's take on the Brio based MPV. The Mobilio in concept guise has already received its global premiere at the Indonesian Auto Show. The premium MPV will definitely make it to India, giving stiff competition to Toyota Innova, which has been ruling supreme for years.

Jeep Grand Cherokee

Expected Launch: Early 2014
Expected Price: INR 30 lakhs - INR 40 lakhs

Indians have been expecting brand Jeep to make its ‘Grand' re-entry into India for more than a year now. The Grand Cherokee was expected to arrive in India in late 2013. That seems unlikely now. We expect Jeep Grand Cherokee to be unveiled at the 2014 Auto Expo followed by a launch soon after. Grand Cherokee is likely to be offered with a 3.0-litre V6 diesel generating 237 HP and 549 Nm torque.


Jeep Wrangler

Expected Launch: Early 2014
Expected Price: INR 35 lakhs - INR 50 lakhs

Jeep Wrangler has inherited the toughness of the Jeeps from yesteryears. The Wrangler is ever off-road enthusiasts dream SUV and is offered in both two door and four door variants. All wheel drive is delivered via the Jeep Command-Trac system. For India, the Wrangler is likely to come with the 2.8 liter diesel mill delivering 200 PS and 460 Nm of torque.
