By Ganesh

Polaris, the world's largest ATV manufacturer, has debuted a new ATV with non pneumatic tyres or airless tyres. The name Polaris has given these tyres is TerrainArmor. These new age tyres feature in Polaris's new military grade Sportsman WV850 H.O ATVs.

Polaris Sportsman WV850 H.O is actually meant to be a work area ATV, were it can be used to carrying and hauling of heavy objects. The inherent characteristics of these non pneumatic tyres serve well in harsh terrain of all sorts. Polaris has released a couple of videos which gives you a better idea about its TerrainArmor tyres.

Non pneumatic tyres usually replace the function of the air inside a tyre with flexible, yet durable plastic and rubber. In general, airless tyres require zero maintenance, but lack of side walls, offer greater rolling resistance and offer comparatively less cushioning, which makes them suitable only for specific tasks such as off roading and other rough tasks.

The Sportsman WV850 H.O ATV is based on the Polaris MV850 military vehicles and even comes with single speed transmission, steel exoskeleton and of course, the TerrainArmor tyres, which were originally developed for use in military ATVs.

Naturally, no air means a punctured tyre does not even come into the picture. According to Polaris the TerrainArmour tyres can last for 563 KM after being hit by a .50 caliber bullet and 1600 km after running over 3 inch railroad spikes.

The Sportsman WV850 H.O ATV is capable of carrying 680 kg of load, has a 3,500 pound winch and a 44.48 liter fuel tank. Considering the tyres don't puncture and is nigh indestructible this thing is the ultimate ATV.

"In early, 2013, Polaris announced we'd launch the NPT technology on an off-road vehicle built for consumers," said David Longren, vice president of Polaris' Off-Road Division. "We have seen great success with NPTs in military and disaster relief scenarios and are excited to bring this technology to the consumer market for extreme work applications."
