Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive To Take On BMW i3
It is yet to be determined how successful the BMW i3 electric small car, launched a few months back, will be in the real world. On paper though, the car seems very impressive. Also, come 2014 the i3 will receive heat from arch rival Mercedes-Benz's B-Class electric drive.
Mercedes-Benz is confident of turning the B-Class electric drive into a greater success than the i3, with Daimler R&D boss Thomas Weber stating their electric car will be as good as the competition if not more. Mr. Weber spoke during an interview given to Automobilwoche, sister publication of Automotive News Europe.

Thomas Weber also revealed a few details about the B-Class electric drive. One particularly interesting one is that the vehicle will look more like a compact SUV rather than a five door hatchback. This will be owing to the placement of the battery and the rather large 18 inch wheels.
Weber stated that B-Class electric drive will have five seats instead of four in the i3. Also, the Merc will have a real world range of 200km as against 190 km offered by BMW i3.
Top speed will also be greater at 160 km/h, against BMW i3's 150 km/h. Meanwhile, 0-100 km/h will take 7.9 seconds, which is slightly slower than 7.2 seconds delivered by the i3.
The torque generated by the electric motor powering the B-Class will also be greater than i3's at 300 Nm to 250 Nm. "The price is not set, but we want to be extremely competitive here, too." Webber said. "We are offering sports car feeling in a compact car," he added.
Mercedes-Benz B-Class electric drive will arrive in U.S and European market in 2014. Electric car market in India is not mature enough to cater to high-end vehicles such as the i and B-Class electric drive in India and they are unlikely to develop till the development of support infrastructure.
