GM India Recalls 1.14 Lakh Chevrolet Tavera Units
The Tavera MPV, diesel Sail and the Sail U-VA. These were three models General Motors India stopped producing in June. While it became known that the production was halted due to irregularities with vehicle emission, the true extent of the problem became only yesterday afternoon when GM India issued a voluntary recall of 1.14 lakhs units of Tavera MPV
This makes the recall one of the largest in Indian automobile history. So large is the number that even Tavera units which were sold as far back in 2005 fall under it.
"General Motors India is voluntarily recalling the Chevrolet Tavera BS-3 (2.5L variant) and BS-4 (2.0L variant) from model years 2005-13 to address emissions and specification issues," the company said in a statement.
The issue concerning the Tavera BS-3 is with vehicles emission figures, while the Tavera BS-4 units have failed to meet certain specifications. The inconsistencies came to light when the automaker carried out routine checks on random vehicles. GM India had informed the government about the issue as early as Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Tavera owners need not worry too much about the recall since the issue does not compromise safety in anyway. The Tavera MPV has always been more popular with private vehicle service providers. It is not known whether the problems with the vehicle caused it to deliver lower fuel efficiency. Nevertheless, all of the 1,14,000 units will be repaired free of cost at GM India's 280 dealerships, which is all that matters now.
Tavera MPV production will reportedly begin from August and the Sail hatchbacks will be back on production line by the end of this month.
