Electric Taxi Vehicles In India From Maruti, Tata Motors & Mahindra?

By Ganesh

It is now public knowledge that the government is planning to go forward with its plan to provide subsidy to electric vehicles in India. Part of the The National Electric Mobility Mission Plan is to start ‘last mile connectivity' services.

The initiative will be kickstarted with a pilot program in Delhi where electric vehicles will be employed to ferry passengers to and from Delhi Metro stations to their final destinations, which could be place of residence or work. The plan was announced by Ambuj Sharma, Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Heavy Industries, on the side lines of the recently held Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (Siam) conference in Mumbai. As reported by HT.

These electric taxis will operate within a radius of about 5-6 kilometers. Naturally, Indian automakers are keen to part of the project and should be seen offering electric passenger carriers once the last mile connectivity initiative comes into effect.

Mahindra, the only Indian company with a production electric four wheeler, will extend its portfolio with an electric version of the Maxximo people carrier. Giving competition to Mahindra will be Tata Motors and Maruti.

Neither of the two Indian automakers have production electric vehicles, but both have showcased electric versions of their existing models in auto shows in the past.

Tata Motors is likely to come out with electric variant of its Ace and Magic four wheeled people carriers, while Maruti could enter the foray with an electric Eeco, which it showcased at the 2010 Auto Expo.

None of the manufacturers have made their plans official and are only likely to do so once the subsidy come into effect next year. The electric vehicle subsidy is most likely to comes into effect from April 2014, according to Sharma. The government hopes financial support for electric vehicles will translate into 17%-18% electric vehicles out of an estimated 9 million vehicles, by the year 2020.
