Maruti Suzuki is reportedly planning a facelift to its best selling sedan - the Swift DZire later next year. One would be wondering why a car which was launched less than a year ago is being refreshed. The answer lies in the upcoming competition - Honda Amaze.
The Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire is the best selling entry level sedan in India. The DZire is a compact sedan that the market as well as the hearts of buyers thanks to its high mileage, decent looks, low price and practicality.
Honda, the Japanese carmaker is all set to launch its first compact sedan in India - the Brio based Amaze sedan. The Amaze has already been launched in Thailand with a petrol engine. However, the Amaze will arrive in India with both petrol and diesel options. The Amaze will be Honda's first diesel car in India.
The Honda Brio has already impressed car buyers with its looks, performance and space. We expect the Amaze to receive a similar response if not more. The Honda Amaze diesel will pose a serious challenge to the Swift DZire and Maruti Suzuki has started work on a refreshed DZire.
Although Maruti Suzuki has not officially confirmed the Swift DZire facelift, reports say the leading Indian carmaker will launch the refreshed DZire during next year's festival season. We do not expect a dramatic change in the Swift DZire's design. There might be a slight change in the head lights and brake lights.
The interior might see slight changes to improve practicality. The rear seat might be made foldable to increase luggage space. The legroom can also be boosted by making some changes to the seats. If Maruti Suzuki does make all these changes in the DZire, the compact sedan will probably attract more buyers too.
The most important factor that will make the Honda amaze a close competitor of the Swift DZire will be price. Honda will be announcing the Amaze's price only during the car's India launch. If Honda manages to keep the Amaze's price close to that of the DZire you can expect a strong battle for supremacy in the compact sedan market.
The Swift DZire is available with a starting price of INR 4.9 lakhs for the petrol variant while the entry level diesel LDI variant costs INR 6.02 lakhs ( all prices ex showroom Delhi). If The Honda Amaze's price is anywhere close to these figures, Honda can be sure of having a winner in its hands.
