Mahindra and Mahindra has announced that it would stop receiving bookings for its recently launched XUV 500 SUV after bookings crossed more than 8,000 units. In a Facebook post across its model fan pages, Mahindra has said bookings were overwhelmingly high and it was trying to boost production.
The top end variant of the XUV 500, the W8 with four wheel drive happens to be the most preferred variant. As far as the paint colour goes, the pearl white has been booked the most. This has meant Mahindra has to increase production of these variants more than it previously anticipated.
The XUV 500 has only been launched in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, and Pune and the bookings from just the five locations have crossed expected numbers. Mahindra has now decided not launch the XUV 500 in any other cities until the backlog is filled. This will also help Mahindra keep the XUV 500's waiting period low.
Further Mahindra will also ask people who have booked the W8 variant of the XUV 500 with four wheel drive to opt for the two wheel drive variant. It has also said it would try to ask customers to choose another colour apart from pearl white.
The demand for the new SUV has been surprising even to Mahindra and Mahindra. The SUV specialist had previously planned to export some of the cars produced to other countries but this plan has been put on hold until local demand is met.
The XUV 500 is Mahindra first SUV to be built on its global SUV platform. It was launched with three variants – W6 – an entry level variant with two wheel drive, the W8 – the mid level variant with more safety and luxury features and the W8 4X4 – the top end model with four wheel drive.
