The Ford EcoSport was a tremendous success for the American carmaker when launched a few years ago. The EcoSport has the maneuverability of a small hatchback, while striking a strong pose as an SUV. Overall, the compact SUV segment was dominated by the EcoSport.
Now however, there is a new kid on the block, which may threaten the sales of the Ford compact SUV - the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza. The Brezza was unveiled during the 2016 Indian Auto Expo, and Maruti has a clear goal to lead the segment. So how do the Vitara Brezza and Ford EcoSport fair against each other? Let's find out.
Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza: Rs. 7.5 lakh onward [Estimated price; Not launched yet]
Ford EcoSport: Rs. 7.84 lakh onward
Note: Prices mentioned are approximate on-road values (Delhi)
The Maruti Vitara Brezza has all the perfect lines needed to be a modern, compact SUV. The Brezza borrows some of its styling cues from the Vitara, which is sold in the European markets. One of the most prominent design features of the Brezza is its large chrome finish front grille, between the headlights.
The Ford EcoSport is designed based on the global B-segment Fiesta platform. Compared to the Brezza, the EcoSport looks more sporty, thanks to the large front grille and narrow headlights. Also, the spare wheel mounted at the rear of the EcoSport gives the compact SUV a traditional SUV-ish feel and impression.
Engine Specification & Gearbox
The Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza is offered with a standard engine, which is a 1.3-litre diesel mill, that had been tried and tested on the Swift hatchback. The engine is tuned to produce 89bhp and 200Nm of torque, while mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox.
The Ford EcoSport is offered with a choice of two petrol and one diesel engine. The first is a 1.5-litre petrol engine that develops 110bhp and 140Nm of torque, and a 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine that produces 124bhp and 170Nm of torque. The diesel engine on offer with the Ford EcoSport is a 1.5-litre unit that produces 99bhp and 205Nm of torque.
The EcoSport is also offered with an optional automatic gearbox, on the 1.5-litre Titanium petrol variant, while other variants come standard with a 5-speed manual gearbox.
In car comforts and features help sell volumes. The Maruti Vitara Brezza comes with automatic headlamps, rain sensing wipers, keyless entry, push button start, automatic climate control, and an infotainment system with Apple CarPlay.
The Ford EcoSport comes with automatic climate control, tilt and telescopic steering, height adjustable driver's seat, electrically adjustable ORVMs, and an integrated 2-DIN infotainment system that supports USB, AUX, and Bluetooth.
Safety is another crucial aspect in cars these days. The Vitara Brezza features Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) as standard across all variants. Top of the line variant will feature airbags, reverse parking camera, and passenger airbags.
The EcoSport features up to 6 airbags in the top variant (1.5-litre diesel Titanium+), along with ABS, EBD, speed sensing door locks, engine immobilizer, and Ford's emergency assist, which can very well make a difference between life and death.
So which of the two is a better bet? Both compact SUVs are priced almost identical (Vitara Brezza price is only an estimate). The Ford EcoSport offers a much powerful engine compared to the Brezza, but has been in the market for a while now, and has proven to be Ford's best selling vehicle in India. The Vitara Brezza on the other hand is new, and will be backed by Maruti's excellent service network.
So if your valuable money has to be spent reasonably, the EcoSport would be a better choice, since it offers more as a package.
