Maruti Suzuki is competing strongly with newer models in India. The latest launch was the Vitara Brezza SUV and now, the carmaker is gearing up to launch the Ignis crossover in India. The Ignis was first showcased at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show and later during the 2016 Indian Auto expo.

Maruti Suzuki is expected to launch the Ignis by the end of this year and the crossover will be manufactured at the company's factory in Sanand. The facility will also double up as the global production hub.

The compact crossover segment is gaining attention in India, especially after Mahindra came up with the KUV100. Looking at the potential, Maruti is looking at stealing the limelight away from Mahindra. At the moment, the KUV100 is the only vehicle in this segment.

Maruti Suzuki Ignis Design

On the design front, the Ignis will be based on a new lightweight platform which will be 30 percent stiffer and 15 percent lighter. The Ignis ditches the flowing lines like the Baleno, S-Cross or even the KUV100, and Maruti has decided to go for a more boxy design design like the Brezza.

The Ignis could use projector lamps that was showcased on the model that was displayed at the Auto Expo. The headlamp setup along with the daytime running lights give the Ignis a unique character from the front. The front grille is also quite unique to Maruti as it does not share any resemblance to other models made by the carmaker.

The Ignis will have a tall stance and good ground clearance.
