BMW i and Garage Italia Customs have joined hands to produce an innovative colour and material concept cars based on the BMW i models. Both the BMW i3 Garage Italia CrossFade and the BMW i8 Garage Italia CrossFade were presented at the 2016 Paris Motor Show.
The special edition i3 and i8 models will feature an exterior design from the concept and will be available to customers from 2017. The common feature of both the cars is the surface structure which emphasizes the new innovative design and character in a fascinating way.
The colour design was based on the common painting genre during the late 19th and 20th century and provides an expressive appearance.
The CrossFade design of the edition cars of the BMW i3 and i8 was inspired by optical colour mixing, a technique used in the late 19th century.
The technique involves the creation of motifs with the use of small and evenly distributed dashes of colour. The neighbouring colours do not get mixed but only blend together in the perception of the viewer.
On the BMW i8 Garage Italia CrossFade, the colour changes between Protonic Blue metallic and Protonic Dark Silver metallic are used to highlight the lines and surface contours. As for the BMW i3 Garage Italia CrossFade, the colour moves from the front end and the side panels in a vertical fashion.
Speaking at the event, head of BMW Group Design Adrian van Hooydonk said that with BMW i the company was successful in overcoming previous restrictions in automotive designs with the use of new materials. He also said that the progressive expressiveness of the Garage Italia CrossFade Edition is perfectly apt with the BMW i3 and the BMW i8.
