The Toyota FT-4X concept has been revealed at the 2017 New York Auto Show.

Japanese carmaker Toyota has revealed the quirky FT-4X concept at the 2017 New York Auto Show. While the quirky Toyota FT-4X will not hit the production line, the boxy SUV concept is fully functional and targets millennials with its rather outlandish design.

The FT-4X is based on Toyota's TNGA platform which also underpins the snazzy CH-R SUV. However, the FT-4X is smaller than C-HR in length but is wider and taller and measures in at 4,249 mm long, 1,821 mm wide and 1,623 mm tall. The wheelbase of both SUVs is identical at 2,640 mm wheelbase.

Powering the Toyota FT-4X is a small displacement four-cylinder engine that sends power to all four wheels through a CVT gearbox. A low-range gearbox is also provided.

On the outside, the FT-4X features a rather retro design with beefy wheel arches and large six-spoke alloy wheels wrapped in off-road tyres.

Other wacky features include the white wraparound front mask up front which houses the angular headlamps, a GoPro camera integrated into the driver's side door mirror, a removable vertical glass "picture window" set in the C-pillar and a hardened roof with a charging point.

However, the craziest feature is the "Multi Hatch" tailgate that is capable of opening as a split tailgate in Urban mode, or upwards like a traditional hatch in Outdoor mode.

Inside, the craziness continues a sleeping bag that stows between the front seats and acts as the armrest, with large storage spaces coloured blue for closed storage and orange for open cubby holes.

Also present is a removable boom box that acts as the car's audio system. Other features include door handles that double up as water bottles, a flashlight integrated into the ceiling at the rear, USB ports in the armrests and heated and refrigerated storage bins in the rear.
