Los Angeles Auto Show 2016: Unhinged Mercedes E63 S AMG Debuts In The City Of Angels
Merc’s E-Class topping AMG tuned sedan is a 600+bhp all-wheel drive car that you want to put into drift mode.
German carmaker Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the most unhinged version of its E-Class sedan at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show in the form of the E63 S AMG.
The new E63 S AMG will go on sale in Europe in January 2017 with deliveries starting in June.
Powering the E63 S AMG is a revised version of AMG's 4.0-litre V8 engine with new twin-scroll turbochargers that cranks out a tyre shredding 604bhp and 850Nm of torque which makes it the most powerful E-Class of all time.
The power is sent to all four wheels through Merc's 9-speed dual clutch automatic gearbox and 4-Matic+ all-wheel drive system. This ensures a 0-100km/h time of 3.4 seconds which makes the E63 S AMG, the fastest accelerating road-going AMG of all time.
The top speed of the car is limited to 250km/h but can be raised to 299km/h if the owner specifies the AMG Driver's package.
The new E63 S doesn't really forget the tail-out scenes that we associate with AMG cars with its new ‘Drift mode' which sends all the power and torque to the rear wheels alone allowing drivers to express themselves with some crazy tail out drifts just for fun.
For those not willing to drive like a hooligan all the time there are four driving modes - Comfort, Sport, Sport Plus and Individual.
In comfort mode, the mental V8 engine becomes a fuel sipper by decoupling itself from the gearbox when the driver lifts off the accelerator pedal between 60km/h and 160km/h. The engine can also shut down four cylinders between 1,000 and 3,250rpm to save fuel.
To ensure that it does stop when needed, the E63 S has been fitted with 390mm steel brakes while at the rear end there are 320mm steel discs fitted to either wheel.
For those looking for a less mad version, the ‘normal' E63 AMG is also available with 563bhp and 750Nm of torque and a 0-100km/h time of 3.5 seconds and the same top speed.
