2017 Geneva Motor Show: Volkswagen Arteon Revealed — BMW Beware
The new Volkswagen Arteon coupe will challenge the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe when it arrives later this year.
Volkswagen has unveiled the Arteon - its new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe rival - ahead of the car's complete debut at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show.
Arteon is Volkswagen's latest flagship model, boasting elegant five-door fastback styling, the latest VW infotainment systems and technology, and a powertrain lineup powered by a 276bhp 2.0-litre TSI petrol with 4MOTION four-wheel drive.
Designed by Tobias Sühlmann under the tutoring of Klaus Bischoff, it is an elegant idea of the standard four-door sedan, although Volkswagen is promoting it as a grand tourer.
A six-blade grille combined with slim LED headlights commands the front end and emphasises its width, and the complete car hews closely to the lines of the Sports Coupe Concept GTE that the German carmaker revealed in Geneva two years ago.
The Arteon comes with a suite of available technology that places it right up there in premium territory. In the top variant levels, there's the choice of an Audi-like the head-up display, fully digital cockpit with TFT screens, an infotainment system with gesture control, and a LED lighting system with innovative predictive cornering lights.
VW assures three different interiors ‘themes' for the Arteon - black, dark grey and a combination of dark and light grey. Additionally, cloth, Alcantara and leather upholstery will be available depending on the trim, while Nappa leather finishes will be on the options list.
Elegant Birch wood trim will be posted on the top-of-the-line models, while sportier R-Line cars will get aluminium accents. Both will be coupled with piano black centre console panels.
Volkswagen's new 1.5 TSI petrol engine forms the base option with 148bhp and cylinder deactivation technology. It's followed by two 2.0-litre options - one with 187bhp and a more potent 276bhp engine paired with the 4MOTION four-wheel drive as standard.
The three types of diesel are all 2.0 TDI units, with 148bhp, 187bhp and 237bhp respectively. 4MOTION all-wheel-drive will be a choice of cars with the 187bhp diesel, while it'll be regular on the 237bhp car.
All engines will be available with the 7-speed DSG gearbox and will be standard on the 2.0-litre petrol models as well as the top-of-the-line diesel.
